Before we start playing Poker tournaments we should be aware of different poker players that we might face during the tournament. It is very important to understand and analyze the players as the tournament progresses. By understanding the different poker players, we must adjust our game accordingly. This will help us immensely and help us in winning the hands more often and boosts our confidence in winning the tournament. So, here are the types of poker players that we come across in a tournament.

1. Newbies

These are the poker players that haven’t been involved in a lot of tournaments and are playing their first or second tournament. These poker players are very enthusiastic in learning the game and are also intelligent but lack experience.

You have to handle these kinds of poker players carefully. Even though they are new to the game, they might be really good at playing the game. You, have to build pressure so that they crumble under the pressure due to lack of experience.

2. Rocks

These are the poker players that hardly ever play a hand.  They wait for the best hands in order to bet. These guys usually don’t bluff and wait for really good cards in order to make a move. They sometimes even wait for hours to make a bet and just sit idle waiting for that perfect hand.

To handle these kinds of poker players is easy. Whenever he plays, it indicates that he has a really good hand. So, we need to make sure we have a decent hand to play against these players.

Also, if he bets in the beginning then just try to raise him and see what he does. Usually, Rocks fold. But, if they further raise you then it is better to fold your cards and wait for your next turn.

3. Noobs

These are the players that think they know everything and refuse to learn anything from others. These guys think that they are the best players in the world and play rashly which costs them the game usually.

These are the players that are easy to play with. You can bluff them more often and win hands consistently. Just make sure you give them the impression that they have the best hand and fool them into betting and resulting in a win for you. You always want more players like them to be in the same tournament you are playing.

4. The calling Station

These are the players that usually play most of the hands and are willing to look at the flop to decide further. These players usually fold when someone raises from Big blind. So, it is really easy to identify these kinds of players. And these kinds of players will be more in numbers while playing poker tournaments.

Playing against these players we must not bet if we don’t have a good hand. Bluffing a calling station won’t make us any good since they usually bet even if we are bluffing. With strong hands, we must bet more than the big blind and try to make the calling station fold their hands. If they don’t fold their hands then it is best to fold ours and wait for the next turn.

5. Nits

Nits are the poker players that are very similar to Rocks. Nits are even more choosy when it comes to betting. Nits hardly Bluff and when they make a bet you know they have a good hand.

You should be careful while playing against these players. If you raise your hand thinking you have the best hand and a Nit Calls, then it is better to fold your hands because 90% of the time he has a better hand than you.

6. Maniacs

Maniacs are the poker players that play a number of hands and are very aggressive when it comes to betting and playing hands. They usually don’t play strategically but think they got the best hand always and bet. These are the players that don’t fold their cards too often.

It is important to play tight against these kinds of poker players. By playing tight, I mean play those hands which are not completely useless and can help you in some way. We shouldn’t bluff against these players. Instead, we must play safely making them bluff thinking you have a bad hand. Overall, we need to play safely against these kinds of players.

7. Donkeys

Donkeys are the poker players that play hands and enter the flop thinking why did I even play that hand. These players can be extremely aggressive or extremely loose. These players are very talkative and try to bluff you thinking they got the best hands.

Sometimes they bet on the flop and you must wonder why did they even bet on this flop. Makes no sense. It is best to play against these poker players since they are bluffing most of the time.

We should target these kinds of players and take their money bits by bits. Also, hope more players like them, are in the same tournament as you’re playing.

8. Mr. ABC Poker

These are the kinds of poker players that follow the complete rule book of poker. Also, these players play strategically more than just playing blindly. These players know when to raise a hand and when to bluff. It is very difficult to read these kinds of players because they play the game smartly.

These are the players that are the exact opposite of Donkeys. Make sure you have a good hand while playing against these players. Also, you must be very active to know if they are bluffing or not.

The best advice is not to play against these players initially. Just observe how they play and play against them when you are 100% sure you have the best hand.
